In March 1979, the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA) sponsored a pre-licensing seminar that garnered significant attendance. The seminar attracted more than 50 independent pest control operators. Among the participants were two notable individuals, namely, Mr. Julio Salazar, the operator of J.A. Salazar Dependable Pest Control (now Multi-Pest Services Corp.), and retired Colonel Marcelo “Roy” Roa Yu, the proprietor of pest control services under Emar Merchandising and Pest Control Services.
The seminar, already in its third day, provided an opportunity for Salazar and Roa-Yu to exchange thoughts during a break. They retreated to a quiet corner within the AIT grounds, where their conversation gradually shifted to the concept of forming a new organization dedicated to pest control professionals. This seemingly casual dialogue would eventually lay the foundation for an association that would later make a significant impact on the pest control industry in the Philippines.
At the time, Colonel Roa-Yu was an active member of a pest control organization. However, as a visionary by nature, he found himself contemplating the expansion of pest control advocacies into a nationwide movement. Similarly, Mr. Salazar, who shared this forward-looking mindset, recognized the potential in Roa Yu’s vision and saw an ideal opportunity for collaboration. With a shared enthusiasm and drive, Colonel Roa-Yu and Mr. Salazar set in motion the establishment of a new organization.
The initial meeting of the proposed association was held at the Capitol Hills Golf Club House. Mr. Salazar, tasked with organizing the event, successfully attracted nearly a hundred participants eager to hear Col. Roa Yu’s message. His address was well-received, sparking interest among the audience. Many attendees stayed beyond the formal meeting to discuss and further explore the association’s potential, forming what would later become the core group of the organization. Subsequent meetings were held to address the intricacies of establishing the association. During one of these pivotal gatherings at the Philippine Columbian, the group unanimously agreed on the name Pest Exterminators Association of the Philippines, Incorporated. With this identity established, PEAP’s formal launch culminated in the landslide election of Colonel Marcelo “Roy” Roa Yu as its first president. His leadership was followed by a succession of dedicated presidents who have upheld and furthered the association’s objectives.
Over the years, the success of PEAP stands as a testament to the power of shared ideals and steadfast commitment. As a respectable organization that serves as a platform for novelty, team work, and perpetual growth within the pest control industry, PEAP of today remains a symbol of great achievements that stem from modest beginnings. As it continues to evolve, the Association remains a lasting legacy to the vision and hard work of its founders and the solid support of its members.
